Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Sawm (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allaah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allaah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar: Allaah is the Most Great)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.” [al-Baqarah 2:185]

This blessed month is a great opportunity for goodness, barakah (blessing), worship and obedience towards Allaah. It is a great month, a noble season, a month in which hasanaat (rewards for good deeds) are multiplied and in which committing sayi’aat (bad deeds) is more serious than at other times. The gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the sinners’ repentance to Allaah is accepted. It is a month whose beginning is mercy, its middle is forgiveness and its end is redemption from the Fire.  Read the rest of this entry »

  • “The worst droughts in the Horn of Africa in 60 years causes severe food shortages causing”
  •  “Over 11 million people affected”
According to reports from the UN, the current drought in the Horn of Africa is the ‘the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.’ More than 11 million people have been affected, many of them in Somalia.  This year has seen the lowest river levels in Somalia and there hasn’t been enough rain to refill the dwindling water supplies.

Countries neighbouring Somalia have been finding it very difficult to accommodate the influx of Somali refugees in the camps. Many of the refugees arriving are women and children that have travelled on foot for days at end. They come with harrowing stories about others that perished on the way to the camp due to dehydration.

Children are suffering the worst effects of malnutrition and exhaustion as a result of the long journeys in search of water. Sadly, even  the fortunate few that survive the journey and reach the camps face the issue of poor sanitation in the overcrowded camps that have led to the rapid spread of illnesses such as cholera, typhoid, and measles.

Time is of the essence in ensuring that aid reaches the refugees. The people are in dire need of food and water. It is estimated that over 2 million children are currently malnourished and more than 500,000 are in a life threatening condition.
